Spring is right around the corner, and most people are already thinking about spending more time outdoors. If your springtime plans include updating your outdoor living space, you’re probably aware that the cost of patio furniture can run from a few hundred to several thousand dollars! Before you shell out that kind of money, you’ll want to brush up on the basics of caring for outdoor furniture fabric.
Homeowners looking for ways to add value to their property know that a great outdoor space is highly in demand. Updating your patio and adding quality furniture is a good investment, but the sun, wind, and rain can all wreak havoc on your expensive furniture.
Give your outdoor furniture cushions a little bit of TLC and they’ll look great for years. Here’s how!
Always Check Labels On Outdoor Fabric Furniture
Even if you think you know how to clean outdoor furniture cushions, take a minute to read the labels. Since different types of material require different kinds of care, doing so can help you avoid unintentionally ruining your cushions.
Wash Your Cushions According To The Directions
If you’re lucky enough to have removable patio furniture cushion covers, you can probably just toss them in the washing machine. In almost all cases, you’ll need to avoid the dryer and let them air dry instead.
If the covers don’t come off, you’ll need to spot clean any noticeable dirt. Mix about one-quarter mild dish soap with three-quarters warm water and gently scrub off dirt and grime with a sponge. Rinse them thoroughly with the hose and make sure they’re completely dry before putting them back on the furniture.
Tackle Mildew Like A Pro
Easily get rid of mildew stains by spraying the stains with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Scrub the stains with a bristle brush, then rinse and allow them to try completely. It’s always a good idea to test an inconspicuous spot before you to this!
Keep Up With Maintenance
Once you’ve got your cushions looking great, it’s not hard to maintain them. Vacuum them regularly to remove dirt and make sure you turn them upright to dry if they get soaked in a storm. Unless you live in an area where the weather is nice year-round, make sure to put your cushions away during the winter months.
Don’t Give Up On Stained Cushions
If you aren’t able to get your furniture cushions as clean as you want, don’t give up! It’s pretty easy to re-cover your cushions and only takes a few hours.
You can purchase fabric by the yard, making this an inexpensive project that makes a big difference! Best of all, there are so many different fabric colors and styles available, you can create a whole new look just in time for spring!
